Umguza RDC, with the support of Gender Links and the Sweden International Development Agency, has formally launched a community-led economic development initiative in Ntabazinduna. The greenhouse and processing plant project is part of the Council’s strategy to expand agricultural productivity and improve the livelihoods of the Ntabazinduna community. The project targets women, youth, and men, functioning as a source of employment to minimize incidents of gender-based violence and abuse of drugs.
The Minister of Local Government and Public Works Hon. Winston Chitando commissioned the project on February 9, 2024.
The initiative’s concentration is on crops such as green peppers and green peas, and the first batch of peppers planted had excellent results, so the recipients anticipate favorable results from the work being done.
The Horticulture Produce Export Initiative Anchors on Council strategy of agriculture being key enabler to local economic development, it taps into National Development Strategy 1 of value addition and beneficiation and devolution it aims at fulfilling Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2,5 and 8. The project capitalizes on existing partnerships, including as training by competent and experienced agronomists and the utilization of ADRA Centre of Excellence packing and cold-room facilities in Montgomery-Umguza.
