The Bhekeni Thuthukani Enterprise
Umguza Rural District Council, in partnership with Gender Links and supported by the Swedish Embassy, is thrilled to introduce the Bhekeni Thuthukani Horticultural Enterprise, a community-driven initiative designed to empower vulnerable members of Ntabazinduna, Matabeleland North. Established in 2023, this project is a significant milestone under the Local Economic Development (LED) program, which aims to combat poverty and reduce gender-based violence through sustainable horticulture.
The Bhekeni Thuthukani Cooperative comprises 50 beneficiaries—women, youth, and men—working collaboratively on communal land to grow high-quality produce, including peppers, tomatoes, and leafy greens. The initiative has developed greenhouse and open-field farming systems, along with a pack house to facilitate product processing and distribution, creating a sustainable supply chain that serves markets in Bulawayo, Hwange, and Victoria Falls.
With a vision for a harmonious and economically viable community, Bhekeni Thuthukani not only provides fresh, local produce but also serves as a vehicle for gender equality and economic empowerment. The initiative is committed to environmentally friendly practices, utilizing solar energy and drip irrigation to ensure resource efficiency and ecological stewardship.
Umguza RDC remains dedicated to supporting the cooperative by building capacity in leadership, production, and marketing. Through this endeavor, Umguza envisions a thriving, equitable community where economic opportunity and social progress are accessible to all.
